If you are going to glue on a sole you can use your main fabric for the sole during the main construction. If you wish to do this you will need contact cement/specialised shoe glue. There are also instructions to guide you through applying a thicker, rubber sole to the bottom of your slippers to create a sturdier boot. The easiest option is to use a sewable non-slip fabric. Faux suede is a great option for beginners as it’s easy to sew (suede is also great but often a little harder to sew). There are many non-slip fabrics designed specifically for shoes/slippers. Sole: Unless you are making slippers for a non-walker you need to use something non-slip for your sole. Lining: Medium/thick warm fabrics such as sherpa, teddy, short-pile fur/faux fur, thick fleece. Your finished slipper will fit a little larger but the sewing process will be easier. If you class yourself closer to beginner than intermediate you may find it easier to use thick fleece instead of batting.
There are instructions on page 8 showing you my recommended method of cutting your batting and lining. The thicker you go, the harder it is to sew, the cosier they feel and the comfier Cotton/bamboo/wool batting could certainly be used if you prefer natural fabrics.) It is possible to go thicker with your batting (I have successfully made adult slippers with 3cm polyester batting).
(Note: I recommend polyester as it is generally tougher/harder wearing than natural fabrics. Padding: 0.5cm – 1.5cm polyester wadding/batting. Interfacing: Depending on your fabric choice, you may wish to interface your heel fabric (reinforced heel option only). Fabrics with some give to them will be easier to deal with when sewing the curves, especially around the heel.Ĭontrast Heel Fabric: (reinforced heel option only): Similar weight fabric to main fabric. Heavier, stable knit fabrics can also be used. Great choices include wool blends, tweed, corduroy, velvet, soft denim. Due to the nature of digital downloads no refund can be given if purchased in error.Main Fabric: Medium weight woven fabrics are best.
